David Chastain is the Libertarian Candidate for State Secretary of Education and presented his ideas for the improvement of our school systems.
Steve Sinton is the Democrat Candidate for Congress, Georgia’s 6th District and gave us his views in several areas including immigration, lobbyists, spending, national defense, and embryonic stem cell research.
The Madison Forum hosted two speakers at its Monday, August 14th luncheon meeting.
David Chastain is the Libertarian Candidate for State Secretary of Education. He wants to be the last elected state school superintendent in the history of Georgia. He says it’s time we put an end to politics as usual in the school chief’s office.
Mr. Chastain’s three “Cs” for positive change are: a Constitutional
Amendment which will call for appointing a “highly qualified” professional chosen by a non-partisan state school board elected by the people of Georgia to bring continuity of Georgia’s education policy; Charter Schools to redefine and streamline the process where local communities, led by parents, teachers, education leaders, and business partners work together to charter new and/or existing schools to adopt learning plans that assure student achievement and push test gains higher; and, Community Control to ensure that educational professionals are answerable to the local voters and taxpayers. In this way they can better respond quickly and effectively to the needs of our children and teachers.
Mr. Chastain says there are enough rules and regulations in place, and it’s time to put an end to using Georgia’s children as political pawns.

Steve Sinton is the Democrat Candidate for Congress, Georgia’s 6th District.
Mr. Sinton has as background in radio, which, he says, makes him a great believer in the Bill of Rights. He says he considers himself a fiscal conservative and a social moderate.
Mr. Sinton believes that Washington is broken and just not working for the citizens. He says that our representatives should be the lobbyists in Washington, our lobbyists, working for the voters and not just for big business. Our government should not be paying companies such as MacDonalds or Exxon to help them expand in other countries, but it is. He wants to work toward fiscal responsibility and debt reduction.
On illegal immigration, he says forced deportation of all illegal immigrants would be too costly, but if the government would enforce the laws already in effect and dry up the job market by fining companies for hiring illegal aliens, they would go home. He says we also need a tamper-proof Social Security card so that employers would have no excuse for hiring illegal aliens.
Mr. Sinton says that Social Security is not as sick as so many seem to think it is. With a little tweaking, it could go well on into the 2040’s and then it would still be at 70% capability. He is in favor of a national health plan similar to the one in Massachusetts.
He also says we need build a stronger defense system and to use it only when necessary.
